Our Unique Community

Cocos Islands District High School is at the heart of a unique and culturally rich island community. Our two campuses connect the communities of Home Island and West Island, each with its own character, history and way of life. Home Island is home to the majority of the Cocos Malay community, with strong cultural traditions, language, family connections and a deep connection to the islands. West Island is a diverse community made up of Cocos Malay families, Australian and international residents, and government and service personnel who contribute to island life. While the communities have their own distinct identities, the school provides an important connection between them. Through our two campuses, shared events, integration days, sporting activities, cultural experiences and the daily movement of students and staff between the islands, CIDHS brings children, families and the wider community together. Our students travel across the lagoon to learn, play and build friendships, creating opportunities to develop understanding, respect and a strong sense of belonging across the islands. In this way, our school is more than two campuses—it is one school community, connected by culture, relationships and a shared commitment to our children.
