At Cocos Islands District High School, the content of the Western Australian Mathematics curriculum and EAL/D annotated content descriptors are utilised to ensure students are confident, creative, and clear communicators of mathematics.
A whole school approach to Mathematics, ensures students are exposed to a variety of targeted learning experiences through explicit teaching methods including daily reviews, and exploration through hands-on and multi-sensory learning experiences. Teachers utilise a range of teaching tools to program instruction across all year levels. Dr Paul Swan maths games and Top Ten maths resources are also employed to support mathematical literacy, the application of existing knowledge, and the repetition of learned strategies.
Lessons are planned to encourage educational risk-taking and accommodate varied abilities across a variety of settings including split-year level classes, multi-age group (MAG) classes and classes with EAL/D students. Teachers have a deep understanding of each child in their care and accommodate the range of current levels of learning, strengths, goals, and interests, and differentiate adjusting where necessary.
