At Cocos Islands District High School, we are incredibly fortunate to work alongside a range of organisations and community partners who share our commitment to supporting our students and strengthening our wider community.
These partnerships provide our students with opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, develop important life skills and connect their learning to the unique environment and culture of the Cocos Islands.
Tangaroa Blue
Our partnership with Tangaroa Blue provides students with the opportunity to take an active role in caring for our beautiful island environment.
Each term, our students participate in beach clean-ups on both Home Island and West Island, working together to remove rubbish and marine debris from our beaches. These activities help students understand the importance of looking after our oceans and waterways while developing a strong sense of responsibility and pride in their local environment.
The beach clean-ups are always a wonderful opportunity for students to get outside, work together and make a positive difference to the place we call home.
Legal Aid
We are grateful to Legal Aid for working closely with our school and community to develop resources that are culturally contextualised and relevant to the Cocos Islands community.
This partnership helps ensure that important information about rights, responsibilities and legal matters can be communicated in ways that are meaningful and accessible to our students and families. Working alongside organisations such as Legal Aid allows us to provide our students with practical knowledge and skills that will support them both now and as they grow.
Cocos Islands Seniors Group
Cocos Islands District High School values its partnership with the Cocos Malay Seniors group, bringing generations together to share and celebrate the rich culture of our island community. Through our Cultural Afternoons, students learn alongside seniors through activities such as basket weaving, coconut husking, storytelling and traditional dance.
These experiences provide opportunities for students to ask questions, hear stories of island life and deepen their understanding of Cocos Malay values, customs and traditions. Supported by our teachers and Education Assistants, the partnership strengthens community connections, builds respect across generations and helps ensure cultural knowledge and skills are shared with the next generation.
Ishar Group
We are also very lucky to have the support of the Ishar Group, who work with our students on a range of important health and wellbeing topics.
The Ishar Group brings their expertise to our school while ensuring that health education is delivered in a culturally respectful and appropriate way. This is particularly important in our unique community, where building trust and ensuring that students feel comfortable discussing important health topics is essential.
Their sessions provide our students with valuable knowledge and encourage healthy decision-making, self-awareness and wellbeing in an environment that respects and reflects our local culture and community.
Working Together for Our Students
Our community partnerships are an important part of life at Cocos Islands District High School. By working together with organisations that understand and respect our community, we can provide our students with learning experiences, opportunities and support that extend well beyond the classroom.
We are grateful to all of our community partners for the time, expertise and commitment they share with our students and school community.
