At Cocos Islands District High School, we utilise the Western Australian Curriculum as a vehicle to plan and deliver our teaching and learning programs in the English learning area. We differentiate the content of the Curriculum to ensure that we meet the needs of our students; ensuring learning is relevant, engaging, challenging and personalised so that each child can experience success and be recognised for their strengths.
The whole school approaches we use to develop our students in this area include: Walker Learning, Sounds Write, Heggaty, Peggy Lego Handwriting, Talk4Writing and Spelling Mastery.
The EAL/D Progress Map is used to guide teaching, learning, monitoring and assessment of our English as an additional language (EALD) students as well as the outcomes of the Western Australian Curriculum.
We are able to offer targeted extension and remedial programs where needed to ensure our students achieve their potential. We achieve this by knowing our students well, by understanding how they learn, their strengths and relative weaknesses and, when faced with any difficulty, we seek to understand and to make accommodations. We use MiniLit Sage and Language Lift as an intervention program for our Tier 2 and 3 supports.
Staff undertake comprehensive professional learning based on their teaching needs and school literacy priorities. Staff at Cocos Islands District High School embrace technology as a tool to assist in their students learning and each student has an ipad and each classroom uses their interactive whiteboard to support programs in the English learning area.
